Best eSIM setup for digital nomads in 2026: data plans, backups, and tethering

How nomads who've worked from 30+ countries set up their eSIM stack — primary plan, backup, hotspot tethering hacks, and which plans handle 50+ GB without throttling.

Best eSIM setup for digital nomads in 2026: data plans, backups, and tethering

A working nomad burns 30-80 GB per month. A standard travel eSIM doesn't cut it. Here's the setup nomads who actually work from the road run.

The two-eSIM stack

Most pro nomads run two eSIMs simultaneously:

  1. Primary: Local country plan (30-day, 30-50 GB or unlimited) for the country you're in for 2+ weeks. Local rates are dramatically cheaper than regional roaming.
  2. Backup: A regional or global eSIM with small data — used during transit days, country-hops, or as failover if the primary's network has a coverage gap.

If you have an iPhone 13 or newer (dual-eSIM), or a Galaxy S25, run both at once. Otherwise, install one eSIM and keep the other downloaded but disabled.

Tethering matters

Not all travel eSIMs allow hotspot tethering. Many throttle or block it. Always check the provider's terms — "tethering allowed" should be explicit. MobileXY allows tethering on all plans.

Tethering burns through data fast. A Zoom HD video call from your laptop, going through your phone's hotspot, eats ~600 MB/hour. A 4-hour all-hands meeting = 2.4 GB.

How much data do you really need?

  • Light freelancer (text + occasional video): 20-30 GB/month
  • Typical knowledge worker (Slack + 2-3 video calls/day): 50-80 GB/month
  • Heavy use (large file uploads, all-day video, tethering laptop): 100+ GB/month or local fiber

"Unlimited" plans — the fine print

Most "unlimited" travel plans throttle after a fair-use threshold (typically 20-50 GB) to 3G speeds. For working nomads this is unworkable — Slack messages still go through, but Google Drive uploads grind to a halt.

Read the fair-use terms before you buy. Or buy a fixed 50-100 GB plan that delivers full speed the whole month.

Country-by-country reality

Best nomad infrastructure right now:

  • Portugal (Lisbon, Madeira): 1 Gbps fiber at most coworkings, 5G citywide
  • Thailand (Chiang Mai, Bangkok): Fast 4G everywhere, $0.50/GB local plans
  • Mexico (Mexico City, Playa del Carmen): Decent 4G, beware of café Wi-Fi (often slow)
  • Estonia (Tallinn): 5G everywhere, e-residency programs popular
  • UAE (Dubai): 700+ Mbps 5G, but VoIP blocked — use VPN
  • Indonesia (Bali): 4G everywhere, cheap data, dense nomad community

The cross-border problem

If you fly between countries weekly (London → Lisbon → Berlin), individual country plans break. A Europe regional eSIM wins. Same for Southeast Asia loops — get the Asia regional plan.

For truly global travel, a Global eSIM (works in 130+ countries) is overpriced per-GB but saves the headache. Buy small Global eSIMs only for high-mobility months.

Quick verdict

Two-eSIM stack. Primary = local country, 50+ GB / 30 days. Backup = small regional eSIM for hops. Avoid "unlimited" with hidden throttles. Tethering must be explicitly allowed.

Browse: Thailand, Portugal, Indonesia, Mexico, Europe regional, Asia regional.
