Egypt's three carriers — Vodafone Egypt, Orange, and Etisalat Misr — share 4G coverage across Cairo, the Nile corridor, and the Red Sea resorts. Connection quality is reasonable; the gotchas are about apps, not signal.

VoIP restrictions — important for tourists

Egypt restricts most consumer VoIP apps. WhatsApp voice and video calls don't reliably work on Egyptian cellular networks, and many hotel Wi-Fi providers block them too. Same for Skype, Discord voice, and FaceTime.

Workarounds:

A reputable VPN (ProtonVPN, NordVPN, Surfshark) — generally permitted for tourists and re-enables WhatsApp calls
Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, and Zoom usually work for business calls
Regular SMS and iMessage work fine

How much data?

4-day Cairo + Giza: 2-3 GB.
10-day classic loop (Cairo → Luxor → Aswan → Nile cruise): 6-8 GB.
2-week trip with Red Sea diving: 10-15 GB.

Coverage realities

Cairo, Giza: Strong 4G everywhere a tourist goes — Pyramids plateau, Egyptian Museum, Tahrir Square. 5G rolled out across central Cairo.
Luxor, Aswan: Full 4G in town and at the major temples (Karnak, Valley of the Kings).
Nile cruise: 4G near the larger cities; expect dead zones between Edfu and Kom Ombo where the Nile snakes through farmland.
Hurghada, Sharm El Sheikh: Excellent 4G at resorts, weaker on dive boats once you're 5+ km offshore.
Western Desert, Sinai interior: Plan for dead zones. Inreach beacons or pre-downloaded maps are essential for desert excursions.

Don't buy at Cairo airport

Vodafone Egypt's airport SIM kiosk charges EGP 800-1500 (~$26-50 USD) for a tourist SIM with 25 GB. An online eSIM is half the price and you're connected before you exit immigration. Skip the queue.
