How to install an eSIM on iPhone: complete 2026 step-by-step guide
QR code scan, manual entry, dual-SIM setup, and what to do when the install fails. iPhone XS through iPhone 16 Pro covered.
Installing an eSIM on iPhone takes about 90 seconds if everything goes right. Here's the exact flow.
Before you start
- Confirm your iPhone is unlocked (Settings → General → About → check "Network Provider Lock" shows "No SIM restrictions")
- iPhone must be XS / XR / 11 or newer (any iPhone from late 2018+)
- You'll need Wi-Fi for the install — the eSIM downloads over Wi-Fi, then activates on cellular
Method 1: QR code (easiest)
This is what most providers (including MobileXY) email you after purchase.
- Open the QR code email on a different device — a laptop, iPad, or print it
- On iPhone: Settings → Cellular → Add Cellular Plan
- Hold the iPhone camera over the QR code
- Tap "Continue" when the QR is recognized
- Add a label like "Travel" or "Japan"
- Set your default line for calls and iMessage (keep your home line)
- Set data line to the new eSIM
- Important: toggle Data Roaming ON for the new eSIM
Method 2: Manual entry (when QR doesn't work)
If you can't scan the QR (only one device, or the QR is corrupted):
- Settings → Cellular → Add Cellular Plan → "Enter Details Manually"
- Paste the SM-DP+ address and activation code from your purchase email
- Tap "Next" — the eSIM downloads
Method 3: Direct from MobileXY app (one-tap)
If you have the MobileXY account on the same iPhone, the install is a single button tap. No QR scan needed.
Dual-SIM: which line does what?
After install you have two lines active. iPhone lets you mix-and-match:
- Calls: Default Voice Line (keep your home number so people can still reach you)
- iMessage / FaceTime: Use Apple ID number (so iMessages still arrive)
- Cellular Data: Travel eSIM (so data uses the cheap travel plan, not your home roaming)
- Data Roaming: ON for the travel eSIM, OFF for your home line (so home line doesn't accidentally roam at $15/MB)
Common install errors
"Unable to Add Cellular Plan": iPhone is locked to a specific carrier. Contact your home carrier to unlock — it's free in the US/EU under most contracts.
"Profile already in use": The QR was scanned before. Email support, they'll re-issue.
QR scans but stalls: Try cellular install instead — sometimes iOS can't reach the activation server over hotel Wi-Fi.
After install: the toggle that catches everyone
Settings → Cellular → tap your travel eSIM → toggle Data Roaming ON. Without this, the eSIM won't hand off to the local carrier and you'll see "No Service". This is the #1 cause of support tickets.
